What Is Front-Page HTML Editor?

The front page of a newspaper typically contains the biggest stories of the day in the country it is circulated. It may also tease other stories that will be featured in the edition. The same can be said for a website’s front page. Featured stories or articles on the front page are considered to be very important or interesting.

Microsoft FrontPage (also known as MS FrontPage) is a WYSIWYG HTML editor and Web site management application that was a part of the Microsoft Office suite from 1997 to 2003. FrontPage requires a set of server-side extensions called FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) to communicate with and manage web servers for content creation and publishing. Microsoft offered FPSE for Windows and Unix operating systems.

The first version of FrontPage was released in 1996 with the release of NT 4.0 Server and its constituent Web server Internet Information Services 2.0. FrontPage 1.1 was bundled with NT 4.0 Server and 1.0 was bundled with NT Workstation. FrontPage was updated with every major release of the Microsoft Windows OS until it was retired with the release of Windows XP in 2007. The last version of FrontPage, FrontPage 2003, included Split View which allowed users to edit and preview pages side by side and Dynamic Web Templates that can be applied to one or more pages or even an entire Web site. FrontPage 2003 also introduced Intellisense, a form of autocompletion, and Code Snippets which allow users to create and save frequently used pieces of code for quick access.
