Developing Your Story

developing story

Story development is the process of taking a kernel of a story idea and turning it into a full-fledged narrative. This means identifying the key points of your story and developing them, from the premise through to the climax and resolution. It also includes establishing character, setting, conflict and a theme. By doing this, you lay the foundation for a compelling plot that will keep readers engaged and characters that feel real.

Start by identifying the core problem of your protagonist and exploring their flaws, fears, and false beliefs. This will help you define their internal and external conflicts. Then, create an inciting incident that will disturb their everyday lives, forcing them to address the issue and take action. After that, map out the progressive complications that lead to the climax.

Then, identify your antagonist and explore their worldview and motives. This will help you develop the antagonist’s conflicts with your protagonist and intensify the central conflict. Finally, develop any supporting characters that play an important role in your story. This will ensure they have their own goals and needs that complicate the protagonist’s journey.

At this stage, it’s helpful to consider your audience. It’s important to understand who you are writing for so that the message resonates with them. By doing this, you will ensure your story is engaging, relevant, and cathartic. In addition, you will be able to remove any unnecessary details that could detract from your message.
