Global Affairs Concentration

Global affairs encompasses the interactions and relationships between countries, organizations, and non-state actors on a worldwide scale. They include diplomacy, trade, and security as well as the study of international development, poverty alleviation, and human rights. Global affairs became increasingly significant post-decolonization as newly independent states sought to establish their roles on the world stage. International organizations, such as the United Nations, aided in this endeavor by providing platforms for dialogue and cooperation. These organizations also reinforced the legitimacy of independence movements by promoting self-determination.

A second term for the Trump administration entails a projected return to “America first” policies, emphasizing economic nationalism, and bilateralism. These trends could reshape global dynamics and impact corporate strategies around the world.

Our concentration in global affairs offers you the opportunity to expand your understanding of the processes that shape our world through core courses and an in-depth thematic or regional specialization. The resulting knowledge will prepare you for a career in government (national or regional), the private sector, NGOs, and research institutions. As a graduate of our program, you will be able to address complex issues that confront our increasingly interdependent world, such as global inequality, refugee crises, and the threat of terrorism.
