Global climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. This phenomenon is characterized by an increase in the average temperature of the Earth due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This increase has had a significant impact on ecosystems around the world, affecting biodiversity as well as ecosystem functions that are essential for life. Changes in temperature cause habitat shifts for many species. For example, many species of animals and plants that are used to living in areas with certain climates are forced to move to locations that are more suited to new conditions. This results in some species losing their habitat, which increases the risk of extinction. According to data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), around 1 million species are threatened with extinction due to climate change. Apart from changes in temperature, rainfall patterns are also changing. Some areas are experiencing extreme increases in rainfall, while other areas are experiencing severe drought. This uncertainty can damage ecosystems, such as forests, wetlands and grasslands. For example, frequent flooding can destroy fish habitat and reduce water quality, while drought can cause a decline in crop productivity that is vital for food security. Climate change also contributes to the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters, such as tropical storms, cyclones and forest fires. Increasingly common forest fires not only destroy habitats but also produce higher CO2 emissions, exacerbating global warming. Forests, which function as carbon sinks, are at serious risk of being degraded due to climate change. Biodiversity in the ocean is also threatened. Rising ocean temperatures and pollution are causing shifts in species distribution. Corals, as complex marine ecosystems, experience bleaching that threatens entire marine communities. In addition, ocean acidification due to the absorption of CO2 risks damaging marine life, including mollusks and crustaceans which are highly dependent on calcium carbonate. It is important to remember that the impacts of climate change are not limited to a particular region; the impact is felt globally. Countries whose economies depend on agriculture, fishing and tourism will experience significant losses. Climate change exacerbates social injustice, with the most vulnerable in society being the most affected, even though they contribute the least to its causes. Mitigation and adaptation efforts are very important to face this challenge. Protecting forests, promoting renewable energy, and implementing sustainable farming techniques are some of the steps that can be taken. Awareness of the importance of protecting ecosystems is very necessary to ensure the welfare of future generations. By understanding the impacts of climate change, it is hoped that society can move towards collective and sustainable action.
